Course overview
“Writing for the Web” is a non‑mandatory elective designed to build core reporting, writing, and editing skills that can be applied across print, electronic, and online media. It familiarises students with the social significance of media and prepares them to communicate effectively with diverse audiences in a networked environment.
Learning focus
Across five units, the course covers types of media, basic principles and styles of media writing, and practical formats such as news reports, interviews, commentaries, reviews, and cultural reporting. It also highlights specialised areas like educational, tabloid, investigative, developmental, and photo‑based journalism so that students understand how web writing adapts to different beats and readerships.
Skills and competencies
Students learn the basics of journalistic reporting, acquire competence in multiple forms of written communication, and develop the ability to use relevant technologies for digital writing. They also practise reaching and expanding their audience through clear, ethical, and engaging content tailored for online platforms and various branches of contemporary journalism.
Expected outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to recall and apply fundamental concepts of reporting and media writing, and demonstrate the values and qualities associated with responsible journalism. They will be equipped to analyse and produce different journalistic forms for web and print, distinguish between styles of journalism, and compose focused, purpose‑driven articles for specific media contexts.
